With the potential of another season with no or very little racing, what advice would you give to staying on track. How important right now are the traditional ergo tests or is it more about maintaining/gaining fitness overall levels?

Move your goal posts. Change your goals and view it as an investment for when racing does resume. Perhaps look at improving another area of fitness such as increasing strength if you lack power or endurance if you are better at sprint work.
The difficulty is the uncertainty. In the UK we don't know when racing will definitely resume and in what format. Will it be normal? Who knows! (i suspect in the next few weeks we will find out whether HRR & HWR will be running or not due to set up and prep times).
The emphasis needs to be on the individual and assessing the situation of your squad or athletes. How well are they coping with their training? Are they enthusiastic and are the fittest they've been? Perhaps prep for a test so that they can benefit from seeing their improvements. On the other hand it may be that they are struggling mentally and need to take a step back. Change the focus.
For the majority at present time, I would strongly focus on improving endurance related strength.
